On a Sunday at the end of October, it was finally time for a new Bible Kids Explorers Day for the children in the local church BCC Horten, Norway. It was an exciting and fun day, not only for the children, but also for the adults who participated.
The journey through time took us back to the story of the Jewish girl Esther, who became queen of Persia. The story illustrated how God used her to save His people. The message of Esther’s courage and faith, and how God protected and guided her, came through clearly in the film by Bible Kids.
“Everyone was eager to find out how the story would end and watched the film about Ester with great interest,” says Signe Ellefsen (29). She is one of the Sunday school workers in Horten and guided a group of ten children through the interactive time travel.
“The tasks we solved along the way were engaging, and I was impressed by how well the children did in the quiz at the end, she says.
Mentors and volunteers had worked hard to provide a memorable day for the children. Using various groups and activities, and led by dedicated mentors, the children got to experience the story of Esther up close. Together, they solved tasks and participated in activities related to the day’s theme.
In the last question, the children were asked to come up with their own suggestions for what to do in difficult situations. Some of the answers were: “Pray to God;” “Do what Esther did;” “Tell an adult.” Signe says that the children’s answers made an impression:
“They were short but very wise pieces of advice. I’m grateful to be able to help with this work, because I know it can help children make good choices, and they get role models from the Bible, such as Queen Esther.”
Anna (9) talks eagerly about what made the biggest impression:
“The best part of the film was seeing how brave Esther became because she prayed to God.” Then she adds, “And it was great fun with horse riding and the jumping castle!”
“Esther was brave to go up to the king; she could have been killed, but she dared anyway,” says Max Elihu (11) enthusiastically.
It was a day filled with joy, learning and faith for the children. We hope they came away with something they can take with them into the future where they can say: “With God’s help, I too can be a hero in everyday life” – just like Queen Esther.
