Stop backbiting!

The tongue is only a small part of our body, yet it is written in the Bible that it can set the very wheels of life on fire. We can do a lot of damage with our words by backbiting, for example.

It can be very tempting to backbite, almost as if you feel better about yourself by speaking badly about others. But only the devil would make us believe that. The truth is that backbiting only leads to grief and turmoil.

You can even deceive yourself, so that you yourself believe that the mean words you say are completely deserved. Then hatred and evil develop, just as it happened with Joseph’s brothers.

But Jesus will give us help and strength to stop doing it altogether, if we choose to take up the fight against backbiting. To take a stand against backbiting requires a personal decision. . It is something I decide to do, because I want to serve Jesus. God can bless this kind of attitude. And then you can have it so good yourself, and can do good for those around you. When your heart is good and pure, good words come out of us: grateful words that lift those around me, encouraging words for those who need them, and comfort and edification.

How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

Genesis 39:9

“…laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking”

1 Peter 2:1

For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit.
